Dermaplaning vs facial shaving

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation process performed by a professional using a single-use surgical blade. This procedure removes a few layers of the corneum layer (dead skin). Almost everyone can benefit from this kind of mechanical exfoliation, including pregnant and breast feeding women. As well as minimizing acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and dull skin, dermaplaning can also improve overall skin tone and texture. As a result of the procedure, the skin can appear smoother, firmer, and healthier. Additionally, dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) so you can apply makeup more effortlessly and take selfies with fewer filters.

Facial shaving is performed at home by you. In comparison to the surgical blades used in a professional setting, facial blades purchased in a drugstore are going to be pretty dull for obvious safety and liablity reasons. Comparing the two, a professional dermaplaning treatment is much safer, far more thorough, lasts longer, and looks much better than shaving your own face.

On average, it takes an estimated 40 to 56 days for your epidermis to completely turn over, but that timeline only lengthens as we age, so for those over 25 years old we recommend a professional dermaplane treatment every 6-8 weeks.
